Record each hedge
Each FX protection becomes a record: the instrument, the direction (buy protects those who pay in dollars, sell protects those who receive), the amount, the contracted rate, the maturity and what it protects. Open hedges enter the FX desk in their maturity window.
How to
Mark-to-market
A buy hedge gains when PTAX rises above the contracted rate: (PTAX − rate) × amount. A sell hedge, the opposite. A bought option loses at most the premium paid. Without today’s PTAX the mark stays blank — a rate is never invented.
Rules
A hedge is not a bet
A hedge exists to lock the cost of what has already been bought or sold. The desk shows the unhedged amount and the effect of a 5% dollar move so the owner decides with the number in hand; the coverage policy is the company’s agreement.
