What it's for
Let the operation post an expense as "rent" and have accounting receive it in the correct account, without someone reclassifying a spreadsheet at the end of the month.

Rules

Classify once, and it applies to history
Once the category is linked, every new entry of that nature is already born classified. This is what lets the trial balance and the ledger come out without manual work.
A category without an account doesn't vanish — it stays visible
An entry with an unclassified category shows up as a pending item, instead of being dumped into a generic account. We prefer to show the gap rather than hide it inside an "other".
Reclassifying doesn't rewrite the past on its own
Changing a category's account applies to subsequent entries. Months that are already closed remain as they were — on purpose: a closed period that changes on its own is an audit nightmare.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to classify everything?
For the trial balance, ledger and general ledger to close, yes. Start with the highest-volume categories: usually 20% of them account for over 80% of the entries.
